New to Lindy Hop? Welcome!

You don’t need any experience or a dance partner – just a love of swing. Here’s the best way to get started with us.

Beginner weekends

Jump right in and learn the basics in one weekend

One weekend, a few hours on Saturday and Sunday – and afterwards you’re ready to hit Freiburg’s dance floors. Or to join one of our weekly evening classes straight away.

We alternate between two Lindy Hop workshops: “Triplestep Basics” and “Charleston Basics”. They don’t build directly on each other, so it doesn’t matter which one you start with. After the weekend you can join the ongoing Lindy Hop Basics 2 class. Every now and then there are also beginner weekends for Balboa, Blues and Collegiate Shag.

Swing-out in the studio: a couple at arm’s length, she is laughing

Triplestep Basics

Discover the groove, energy and flavour of Lindy Hop! To 1930s big band swing we dance the most important 8-count moves with the typical triple steps – and take over the dance floor.

A couple in the studio kick one leg high at the same time and laugh at the camera

Charleston Basics

We learn the 1930s Charleston basic with its typical kicks, plus variations like Fly High and Hand-to-Hand Charleston. The music is a little faster and the dance more dynamic!

All beginner weekends take place at the TanzHalle, Markgrafenstraße 38. Dates, times and prices are in the list below and on the registration page.

Dance every week

Basics 1: your evening class

If you’re a complete beginner, the Basics 1 classes are just right for you.

Lindy Hop Basics 1 – groovy, crazy, creative. Lindy Hop is the heart of our dance school: the 1930s swing dance that has us so spellbound we never want to stop. With lots of movement and lots of freedom, it puts a smile on everyone’s face – the ultimate antidote to grey weather.

A Basics 1 class has seven sessions, then it carries on as Basics 2. In your first year you go through Basics 1 to 3 like this – always at the same time, with the same group.

Good to know

With a partner or on your own
You can register with a partner or as a single. Your chance of getting a place is better if you sign up with a partner or choose the dance role “flexible”. To find a dance partner, you can use our Telegram channel.
Trial week
In the first week of each term, all classes are open for a free, no-strings trial.
Joining mid-term
With a beginner weekend you can join an ongoing Basics 2 class. Shorter blocks or other ways of joining mid-term are possible by arrangement – write to us.
Changing partners
Lindy Hop is a social dance: at parties you dance with lots of different people. That’s why we rotate partners regularly in class – you learn to lead or follow much better, and you get to know everyone. So even couples won’t stay together the whole time.
Can’t make it?
We try to keep our classes balanced, so please let us know if you can’t come. If you’ve registered as a couple and one of you can’t make it, the other is still welcome to come alone. If your level has two classes, you can catch up in the other one.

Practical tips for your first class

Dance shoes

Ideally flat, light and comfortable – best with leather soles so they slide better. Canvas shoes or retro leather shoes are popular (e.g. from Aris Allen or Swing and Slide). Or you can have a shoemaker put leather soles on a pair of comfy trainers. Important: street shoes are not allowed in the dance rooms!

Clothes & drinks

Lindy Hop can make you sweat – so wear light clothes, and remember deodorant and a spare T-shirt for the way home. You’re welcome to bring water bottles into the dance room. In the foyer there’s tap water (free) and cheap cold drinks.

Social dances & music

You learn fastest if you go to social dances right from the start – on your own and as a beginner, too: everyone dances with everyone, and nobody has to wait to be asked. You’ll find dates in the calendar. To practise at home: our YouTube playlist.
